Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore California has openings for postdoctoral associates in four areas related to gas-surface or near-surface chemistry and laser diagnostics. These positions will be under the supervision of researchers in the Combustion Chemistry Department of the Combustion Research Facility and in related departments at Sandia Livermore. Principal investigators are listed for each position; however, the successful candidates should expect to interact actively with a team of investigators. All positions require a PhD in a relevant discipline awarded within the last five years, a strong record of achievement, and the ability to work successfully in a collaborative environment.

Details about specific requirements for each position can be found at the Sandia careers website; search by job opening number under http://www.sandia.gov/careers/

For position 667637, "Postdoctoral Appointee - Coupled Gas-Surface Chemistry," the Gas-Surface Interactions group of the Combustion Chemistry department is seeking a motivated postdoctoral experimentalist to assist us in building and demonstrating first experiments on a new world-leading apparatus. These experiments will combine ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) imaging with nonlinear-optical spectroscopy of both the gas phase and surface (such as CARS, SFG, and LIF). We will elucidate the coupled gas-surface chemistry and transport involved in important and canonical catalytic reactions. The principal supervising researchers of this position are Christopher Kliewer, Farid El Gabaly, and David Osborn.

For position 667639, "Postdoctoral Appointee - Imaging Above Engineered Catalysts," the Gas-Surface Interactions group of the Combustion Chemistry department is seeking a motivated postdoctoral experimentalist to carry out ultrafast coherent Raman imaging experiments over engineered catalysts to characterize performance and elucidate local reaction kinetics. The principal supervising researcher is Christopher Kliewer.

For position 667640, “Postdoctoral Appointee - Laser-Initiated Electron Microscopy,” we seek a motivated postdoctoral experimentalist to incorporate resonance enhanced multi-photon ionization (REMPI) with ion and electron imaging microscopies. This new approach is expected to provide high-impact information on the largely unknown interaction of gas-phase transport and chemistry with complex surface reactions, with a key emphasis on heterogenous catalysis. The principal supervising researchers of this position are Christopher Kliewer, Farid El Gabaly, and David Chandler.

For position 667641, "Postdoctoral Appointee - Ultrafast Coherent Spectrosopy," the Ultrafast Physics group of the Combustion Chemistry department is seeking one or more postdoctoral employees to help create innovative laser-based optical diagnostics to advance the study of gas-phase and gas-surface chemical dynamics, combustion, catalysis, and plasma science. Often, these approaches use ultrafast laser systems, advanced techniques of nonlinear optics, and coherent imaging. We are interested in developing new optical approaches for characterizing chemical speciation, dynamics, and molecular energy transfer processes for these systems. The principal supervising researchers of this position are Christopher Kliewer and Krupa Ramasesha.

****************************************************************************
The Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department is part of Sandia's Combustion Research Facility (CRF) in Livermore, California, where over 100 scientists, engineers, and technologists conduct basic and applied research to improve our nation's ability to use and control combustion processes efficiently and cleanly. Under the principal sponsorship of the Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences, the Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department conducts fundamental experimental, theoretical, and modeling research to develop a foundational understanding of the key chemical processes that underlie the complex mechanisms of combustion. Additional programs investigate the effects of combustion emissions on atmospheric composition and climate. Research areas include chemical dynamics and spectroscopy, theoretical and experimental chemical kinetics, flame chemistry and modeling, and gas-phase and particulate diagnostics development and deployment.

Sandia National Laboratories is the nation’s premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation, with teams of specialists focused on cutting-edge work in a broad array of areas. Some of the main reasons we love our jobs:
Challenging work with amazing impact that contributes to security, peace, and freedom worldwide
    Extraordinary co-workers
Some of the best tools, equipment, and research facilities in the world
    Career advancement and enrichment opportunities
Flexible schedules, generous vacations, strong medical and other benefits, competitive 401k, learning opportunities, relocation assistance and amenities aimed at creating a solid work/life balance (benefits vary by job classification)

These positions do not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a DOE security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance must be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.

World-changing technologies. Life-changing careers. Learn more about Sandia at: http://www.sandia.gov
