The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science invites applications for a
PhD student / Postdoctoral researcher
position in the Reaction Kinetics and Oxidation Chemistry -research group led by Academy Research Fellow Arkke Eskola at the Department of Chemistry, University of Helsinki. The group has concentrated mainly on experimental research. Current size of the group is two postdoctoral researchers and two PhD students as well as undergraduates.
The research interests of the group focus on reaction kinetics and oxidation chemistry in gas-phase under low-temperature combustion and atmospheric conditions. We perform our research using unique research instruments in our laboratory as well as in cooperating with research groups in Europe and US. This position especially requires frequent traveling to the US, where kinetic experiments will be performed in a synchrotron environment using state-of-the-art mass-spectrometer instruments in cooperation with our local collaborators. Kinetic experiments will also be performed in our own laboratory. Research in this position aims to obtain an accurate understanding of atmospheric gas-phase degradation chemistry of carbon-capture chemicals 2-aminoethanol and piperazine.
The candidate for this challenging position is expected to be highly motivated and have good (PhD student) / in-depth (Postdoctoral researcher) knowledge of reaction kinetics and atmospheric / combustion chemistry with a MSc / PhD degree in chemistry, physics, or related fields. Previous practical experience in experimental research is highly appreciated for a PhD student and required for a postdoctoral researcher. The successful PhD student applicant will enroll in the Doctoral Programme of Chemistry and Molecular Science (CHEMS) at the Doctoral School of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Science, the University of Helsinki. Good English language written and oral communication skills are required. The candidate is expected to present findings in scientific meetings and workshops as well as prepare manuscripts for publication in international scientific journals. Postdoctoral researcher may also participate on preparation of funding and beamtime applications.
The position is fixed-term for 4 years (PhD student, within this period a PhD student has to defend his/her thesis) / up to 3 years (Postdoctoral researcher) including a trial period of 6 months, and the work is scheduled to commence in September 2019.
Salary and benefits
The salary will be in accordance with the University salary system (for teaching and research personnel, starting level 2 for a PhD student and level 5 for a Postdoctoral researcher). In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary will be approximately 2200–2500 €/month (PhD student) / 3300–3800 €/month (Postdoctoral researcher).
