Dear Listmates,
We'd like to share a new project with you called Remembering Refuge: Between Sanctuary and Solidarity https://www.rememberingrefuge.com/ It is a multi-media site and digital archive highlighting the stories of people from Haiti, El Salvador, and Guatemala, who crossed the Canada-US border to seek refuge. More details about the project are below.
This project is supported by the National Geographic Society ( https://www.nationalgeographic.org/ )and in partnership with the University of Lethbridge Alberta ( https://www.uleth.ca/artsci/geography ).
We will carry out oral history interviews in the summer and fall of 2019. The open access archive and teaching modules will be launched in early 2020. The project collaborators are Dr. Julie Young, Grace Wu, and Johanna Reynolds who have worked collaboratively on a number of projects over the last decade related to critical border studies, migration, and human rights (bios: https://www.rememberingrefuge.com/team )
If you are interested in the project and know of others who might be interested in sharing their stories, we are looking to speak with people who:
• Crossed the Canada-US border to seek refuge, originally from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Haiti
• Crossed between the 1980s and 2018
• Entered through the Detroit (MI) - Windsor (ON) OR Plattsburgh (NY) - Lacolle (QC) ports (we're also interested in hearing from people who crossed at other points).

At a time when the public is inundated with a crisis narrative about migration and borders, Remembering Refuge takes a step outside the story of ‘crisis’ and focuses on the experiences of people who have been displaced multiple times. By focusing on the accounts of people from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Haiti, whose movements are so often tied to the foreign policies of Canada and the US, we want to engage with the public about the contexts that drive migration to and through North America.
Thank you,
Grace, Julie and Johanna
