The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.
PTB uses synchrotron radiation of the electron storage rings Metrology Light Source (MLS) and BESSY II for nanometrology. The advancing miniaturization, especially in the field of semiconductor technology, confronts metrology with new challenges. To support the increasingly important link between experiment and theory, the departments 7.1 "Radiometry with Synchrotron Radiation" and 8.4 "Mathematical Modelling and Data Analysis" are looking for a
doctoral candidate
in the field of physics, applied mathematics or a relevant engineering science
to join us as soon as possible.
The position is limited to 3 years. The remuneration is based on group 13 TVöD Bund (85%).
You will be employed at our Berlin site.
Your mission:
Your mission is to develop and improve models and simulation techniques to determine optical constants for the EUV and soft X-ray range from scattering measurements. The measured optical constants with the associated uncertainties should be provided in a database.
Your tasks:
• Modelling and simulation of electromagnetic fields using numerical methods
• Solving the statistical inverse problems in optics with applications in nanometrology
• Determination of measurement uncertainties using stochastic calculations
• Application and further development of methods and algorithms from the fields
Machine Learning and Uncertainty Quantification
Your profile:
• You have a postgraduate qualification (master’s degree) in physics, applied mathematics or a relevant engineering science.
• You have the ability for mathematical analysis of physical systems and experiments.
• You have experience in numerical simulation of partial differential equation.
• You have excellence skills in programming (e.g. Python, Tensorflow).
• You have an independent and well-structured working style.
• You have excellent communication skills and are a team player.
• You have an excellent command of English and you are able to present convincingly, both verbally and in writing.
You are willing to travel abroad as well as within Germany within the scope of your assignment.
