Reminder of vacancy:

Are you an MSc/PhD qualified statistician, looking to take the next step in your career? We are seeking a talented individual with a real flair for applied statistics to join our Statistics Group at Jealott's Hill International Research Centre in Berkshire.

As one of the world’s largest agribusinesses, Syngenta believes that innovation is critical to sustainable food production. Our research and development organization brings advanced, innovative technologies to help farmers be more efficient, minimize crop damage from pests, cope with unpredictable weather, break through yield barriers and, ultimately, bring in a profitable harvest. To address these challenges, we invest over $1.3 billion per year in global R&D – nearly $3.7 million per day.

In order to develop new technologies and products, it is paramount that research activities are well designed and executed. This is where the Statistics Group comes in.

As a member of the group, you will be working directly with scientists from a wide range of disciplines, on projects across our R&D portfolio. You will be a critical contributor in helping to shape study objectives, and in determining optimum experimental design and data collection methodology. When it comes to analysis of data, you will determine the most appropriate methodology for addressing the objectives and you will either conduct the analysis yourself, or support the scientist in conducting the analysis themselves. Either way, you will have a responsibility to ensure that results are interpreted correctly, and to advise project teams and decision makers on the conclusions that can be drawn. The close working relationship needed between statistician and scientist means it is vital that you are good at working with others and are able to clearly communicate statistical concepts to non-statisticians.

All members of the group are expected to act as statistical ambassadors within the company, promoting the benefits of good statistical practice and the appropriate involvement of professional statisticians in research activities. We are looking for an individual who is not afraid to challenge current practices, and who actively seeks out new opportunities where statistical thinking could have a significant positive impact. You will be a keen problem solver who will relish the opportunity to utilize your skills across a wide variety of projects. You will be driven by the impact you have on the science.

You will need a good degree in a maths-related subject plus an MSc and/or relevant PhD in statistics. A good working knowledge of SAS and/or R, and a familiarity with biological processes are both desirable but not essential. In order to fulfil all aspects of the role it is likely that a candidate would need to have considerable relevant experience, but we also invite applications from suitably qualified but less experienced individuals who have the capability and desire to grow into the role. Whatever your level of experience, in this role you will be well supported in your professional development through a combination of self-learning, on the job training, and internal and external courses.

Although you will be based in the UK, it is likely that much of your work will relate to activities carried out in Switzerland and elsewhere. We believe that there is no substitute for meeting the scientists in person and seeing the science first hand, and so occasional overseas travel to Syngenta’s other research facilities should be expected.

If this opportunity sounds like the challenge you are looking for then we would love to hear from you.

Jealott's Hill International Research Centre is situated in pleasant semi-rural surroundings between Bracknell and Maidenhead, and is the place of work for approximately 800 Syngenta scientists and support staff. Benefits include a company pension scheme, private health insurance and generous holiday entitlement.

Salary: £35,000 – £50,000

To apply online please go to www.syngentajobs.com, navigate to our current UK vacancies and enter the keyword “Statistician”.
