We’re excited to advertise a post-doctoral fellowship position and are looking for exceptional candidates to apply.
The fellowship is to undertake research, engage in knowledge exchange and develop publications on the intersections between illegal wildlife trade (IWT) and security. Candidates are encouraged to develop their own research project broadly in line with the aims of the overall BIOSEC project, which uses a political ecology approach to understand the intersections between conservation and security in responding to the illegal wildlife trade. We particularly encourage candidates interested in researching the demand side of the illegal wildlife trade in so called ‘end-user countries’, or the trade within Europe or in European species. However, applications are also welcome from candidates seeking to develop research on (amongst other things) the plant trade, surveillance and monitoring, use of Artificial Intelligence, the roles of donors, NGOs and philanthropists and animal studies. The appointees will have considerable flexibility to develop their own research to build on their existing knowledge, skills and networks- hence the country/species focus is not fixed. Candidates from the global South are especially encouraged to apply.
Applicants should have a PhD or be nearing completion on social sciences of biodiversity conservation in any of the sub-fields of Politics and International Relations, Human Geography, Criminology, Law or Development Studies or equivalent experience. The Fellowships will offer the successful candidates the opportunity to pursue innovative research in one of the UK’s leading departments of Politics. The successful candidates will be expected to build on existing links to other Departments and Centres at the University, notably the Sheffield Institute for International Development (SIID), the Department of Geography and the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences.
The one – year BIOSEC fellowship is part of a larger programme of research led by Professor Rosaleen Duffy on the interlinkages between biodiversity conservation and security, funded by an ERC Advanced Investigator Grant of EURO 1.8 million (2016-2020). The project is Biodiversity and Security: Understanding environmental crime, illegal wildlife trade and threat finance.
In addition to the application form, applicants should submit: a) CV b) a covering letter explaining why they are suitable for the post (800 words maximum) c) a short research proposal (1000 words maximum) which sets out the intellectual rationale, empirical focus and timeline for completion.
The closing date for applications is 29th April 2019.
