This is an exciting opportunity to join the Department of Mathematical Sciences (DMS). The Department is a growing and vibrant department in the Faculty of Science and Health. DMS is internationally known for its research in a range of areas, and offers an excellent education to its students. The Department is expanding due to increasing student numbers, and now wishes to appoint additional lecturers to help us grow our teaching and research.

Duties of the post

We wish to appoint a full-time Lecturer to expand the Department's existing research in Data Science as well as open up and develop new research activities that will become recognised as outstanding and internationally leading. The research of the department is structured in two groups: Data Science and Mathematics. The new Lecturer will be expected to contribute to the Data Science research group of the department. The post will also include teaching on our data science, actuarial science and mathematics courses at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. This may include delivering existing modules and developing new ones and enhancing our research-led education in this area.

We particularly welcome applications from those who identify as female or non-binary as they are under-represented in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Appointment will be made as Lecturer.

Qualifications and Skills required

Applicants should have a relevant doctoral level research degree in Actuarial Science or equivalent professional experience or practice or be close to completion of PhD. You should also have a good degree in Actuarial Science or related discipline, as well as Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain such recognition by the end of your probationary period and evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes.

You will have experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, and of designing and planning learning activities. You will be able to demonstrate evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile. Strong written and verbal communication skills are an essential requirement of the post.

The successful applicant is expected to be in post no later than 01 October 2019.

At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
