Subject: Books challenging stereotypes of scientists

Hi Hive Mind,

UWE Science Communication Unit and Curiosity Connections Bristol are linking to Bristol Reading City, and we would like to promote books which challenge stereotypes of who scientists are, or what they do. We're aiming at kids of all ages, from birth to 18. We know about:

- Rosie Revere Engineer

- Ada Twist Scientist

- Iggy Peck Architect

- Bedtime Stories for Rebel Girls/Boys

- The famous women series e.g. Marie Curie

We wondered if people have other suggestions. This could include:

- Women/girls as protagonists (i.e. doing things in a story, not being a bystander or helper)

- Scientists not wearing white coats

- People from other ethnicities

- Books demonstrating curiosity, and not giving up after failure.

Please email [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> with ideas!

Laura Fogg-Rogers, UWE Bristol

Subject: Short documentary film about anti-vaxx movement - funding thoughts?

Hello all,

I'm interested in the idea of making a short documentary film exploring the

anti-vaxx movement, telling the story from a science/history/philosophy

perspective. I don't think the current situation is helped by how vitriolic

the debate has become, so it would be really interesting to reflect on what

drives scepticism around the issue and to try to understand how we've ended

up in this place.

Does anybody know of any organisations or schemes that might offer small

amounts of funding for this kind of project? Or large amounts more than

welcome too!

Thanks in advance for your suggestions,

Peter

Dear PSCI'ers,

The GROW Citizen's Observatory<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgrowobservatory.org%2F&data=02%7C01%7Claura.foggrogers%40UWE.AC.UK%7Cc1e5aada21bc4c3e2d7008d6ad915fc6%7C07ef1208413c4b5e9cdd64ef305754f0%7C0%7C0%7C636887237226775447&sdata=uECPlHaLJruJGMHNvYHXJN58ASYdHmNVH5sbBnClap8%3D&reserved=0> has just started a free online course titled "Citizen Science: Sensing the World" that might be of interest to the community.

This course will introduce you to Earth Observations, satellite missions and citizen sensing.

Contents also include an introduction to the history, present and future of citizen science, open data with new in-depth content on DIY technology, including how to build your own soil moisture sensor. Explore how widely available soil sensors combined with satellite data can help us understand and predict our changing climate.

This year's iteration of the course has an extra week including content on GROW’s latest data art and how to handle and analyse soil sensor data, as well as an introduction to other environmental open datasets for you to carry out your own research. For those who are registered by 22 March, there will be a call for expressions of interest to receive sensors and support the development of new GROW Places, our geographic demonstrators.

Open: 18th March for 3 weeks.

Recommended hours of study: 3 hours a week, flexible learning.

The Double Helix by James Watson. It shows that scientists are not all

cold calculating robots as seen in the movies. It shows how there are

different approaches to solve problems. It shows how personality clashes

and miscommunication can cause massive problems. And it does have some

examples of the stereotypes as well, so a whole range in one book, just

goes to show how diverse we are!

Hi Laura,

Here at Glasgow Science Centre we are in the midst of writing several stories which explore all of these themes in some way. They'll be distributed as digital resources for teachers as part of an Erasmus+ project later in the year.

Id be more than happy to share these when they are finished, with anyone who would be interested.

The protagonists of the stories are all based on real life scientists currently active in academia and industry.

Happy to chat off list if you have any queries :)

Cheers

Hi Hive Mind,

UWE Science Communication Unit and Curiosity Connections Bristol are linking to Bristol Reading City, and we would like to promote books which challenge stereotypes of who scientists are, or what they do. We’re aiming at kids of all ages, from birth to 18. We know about:

- Rosie Revere Engineer

- Ada Twist Scientist

- Iggy Peck Architect

- Bedtime Stories for Rebel Girls/Boys

- The famous women series e.g. Marie Curie

We wondered if people have other suggestions. This could include:

- Women/girls as protagonists (i.e. doing things in a story, not being a bystander or helper)

- Scientists not wearing white coats

- People from other ethnicities

- Books demonstrating curiosity, and not giving up after failure.

If it hasn't already been recommended I would suggest:

'The immortal life of henrietta lacks'

It highlights the wrongs of science and how a newer generation of

scientists looked again at henrietta's contribution to science (also a

great basis to discuss 'ethics'!)

For sure.

Lots of teachers and parents of young girls mention this as being inspirational.

As for Scientists not wearing white coats, I was very influenced by David Attenborough’s Zoo Quest books, Thor Hyerdahl’s Kontiki and Aku-Aku and all the Gerald Durrell books apart from “My family and other animals”, mainly because it didn’t have enough other animals in it.

Hey Laura,

Joan Proctor, Dragon Doctor by Patricia Valdez & Felicita Sala has to be on your list if you've space for a super zoological-themed case-study in awesome.

If it hasn't already been recommended I would suggest:

'The immortal life of henrietta lacks'

It highlights the wrongs of science and how a newer generation of scientists looked again at henrietta's contribution to science (also a great basis to discuss 'ethics'!)

Cheers

Hi Hive Mind,

UWE Science Communication Unit and Curiosity Connections Bristol are linking to Bristol Reading City, and we would like to promote books which challenge stereotypes of who scientists are, or what they do. We’re aiming at kids of all ages, from birth to 18. We know about:

- Rosie Revere Engineer

- Ada Twist Scientist

- Iggy Peck Architect

- Bedtime Stories for Rebel Girls/Boys

- The famous women series e.g. Marie Curie

We wondered if people have other suggestions. This could include:

Subject: Any naturalist/wildlife ID experts in London for City Nature Challenge?

Dear all,

Apologies for cross-posting.

I'm helping promote and run several events on urban wildlife across London during the City Nature Challenge, which this year will be 26-29th April (Friday to Monday). This is a yearly friendly competition between cities around the world to celebrate and identify urban wildlife. You can look it up here https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcitynaturechallenge.org%2F&data=02%7C01%7Claura.foggrogers%40UWE.AC.UK%7Cc1e5aada21bc4c3e2d7008d6ad915fc6%7C07ef1208413c4b5e9cdd64ef305754f0%7C0%7C0%7C636887237226805472&sdata=yN5Wi6S3hO02p91YbMAn%2BpFbXcsS87vUNPFgaDMPnWA%3D&reserved=0 and very soon there'll be a lot more materials from the Natural History Museum coming out for anyone running an event.

Two public events will be:

Friday: UCL Conservation Society, afternoon BioBlitz probably in Gordon Square by UCL;

Saturday: Natural History Museum and several other teams, all-day series of wildlife events.

Are there any wildlife enthusiasts among you who would be able to help identify commonly found species in London? Particularly low-key ones such as pond insects, fungi, lichens etc? Would you be able to help out at either of the above events? NHM would be able to pay up to £20 in travel expenses, and you'd probably get fed. I'll ask about expenses from UCL Conservation, but I expect it's likely you'd get the same.

Happy to answer any questions about City Nature Challenge - it's designed so that the entry barrier is extremely low. Most of the nature recording is done on apps such as iNaturalist. The idea is that any member of the public can just get out their phone, snap a photo of a nettle or pigeon or something more interesting if they're lucky, and it would count towards the total number of organisms recorded. It's essentially a scicomm/public engagement event, encouraging people to get into recording nature and citizen science, but in a fun, easy way - they can take it further or not as they wish.

However, any naturalists and wildlife enthusiasts are greatly in demand if you'd like to help at either event - they'd be incredibly grateful to you.

Best wishes,

Alice

(UCL, London, UK)
