Dear John,
I dare assume that significant value of celebrities' sayings are fakes.
Nowadays one can easily look through all (or almost all) written matter using computer or Internet tools, and lack of reliable source seems to be a serious argument in "fake version" favour.
As to "If history..." quote, it first appeared in Internet only in 2001 on sites like "1000 Brilliant Quotes", "History Quotes Guaranteed To Inspire You" etc.; not a single book, magazine or even newspaper reference. So, basically...
