Dear all,
The Geoforum editors have just published a new editorial in which we try to clarify our position on all of the important discussions around paywalls and open access publication that have been circulating lately, within which our publisher Elsevier often features centrally. You can access it freely through the following link (it will continue to be OA after this link expires as wel): https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0016718519300831?dgcid=author.
As explained in the paper, this has been the outcome of a series of negotiations between Elsevier and the editorial group/board over the last several years that has now resulted in a new funding arrangement for support for community development activities indexed to the number of reviews our manuscripts receive (to help value our reviewers' hard work without paying them directly). While this arrangement cannot address many of the issues rasied in the OA debate we see it as a productive step forward within the current publishing model. We look forward to your engagement with the piece and continued discussion of these urgent issues.
Best,
Rob, on behalf of Sarah Hall, Kanchana Ruwanpura, Maggi Leung, Julie MacLeavy, Sarah Turner, Harvey Neo, and Esteve Corbera
