Hello all,
I think there is also some value in looking at older narratives that could be considered anthropological (or perhaps not, but at least they would raise critical questions about what anthropology is). I’m primarily thinking of Tacitus writing about the “barbarians” in Rome and Ibn Battuta’s travel writings on South and East Asia.

Dear Mariske, and dear all,
This is a very important topic and I am pleased to hear that Utrecht University is developing a course on decolonizing anthropology. This e-mail discussion already demonstrates the many sides that have to be taken into account in such a course! Can I please remind you all that the EASA network for the Anthropology of Race and Ethnicity is discussing the particularities of what ‘European Anthropology’ is and how discussions of decolonizing anthropology relates to this, in its next network meeting (27/28 June 2019, Leiden University). Although I shared this on this mailinglist before, attached the CfP to this email once again. It might be extra important to mention that we will dedicate one afternoon to practical workshops and sessions in which we particularly focus on sharing practices of decolonizing the curriculum, diversity within faculties and within the classroom. This afternoon will be organised together with the Dutch Anthropology Association (Abv). Hope to see many of you there!

Re: Amanda's comment, yes, that is absolutely an important distinction to
make, though I dare say I never intended any kind of binary opposition
between a "non-western" upbringing (both coincidentally Indian, in this
case) and being educated in a "western" university where one would cancel
out the other. That kind of stance would not seem very conducive to having
open and interested discussions.
But, I chose my two rather arbitrary and off-the-top-of-my-head examples as
two anthropologists with a non-western background who generally practise
"western-style anthropology" (whatever might characterise that as a whole).
Of course, this is only a problem if one has a *very *general problem with
anthropology as it is taught and practised in, say, Euro-American
universities. And indeed, there are some who are intensely more critical of
anthropology in general, "despite" having a PhD from "the west" (note the
amount of scare quotes here that mark the problematic ways in which I am
using several far too big terms in a far too superficial manner, mainly in
the interest of expediency).
Zoe Todd is a scholar of a more ardently critical bent, and contributor to
the contemporary "de-colonialising of anthropology" debates. The following
blog post of hers ties in several different themes in that respect (starts
off with the HAU farce, but is not about that specifically):

These are really important, challenging issues and insightful debates that
are much appreciated. However, I imagine that both Akhil Gupta and Arjun
Appadurai and many other Asian, African, Latin American-born/raised
scholars (anthropologists or otherwise) might take exception to the blanket
dismissal of their lived experiences besides/beyond their 'Western'
academic training or lives, and seeing the former as having been diluted
out of existence by the latter. I would propose a more nuanced,
historicized, and also perhaps intersectional approach as an alternative to
the rather fixed divides being discussed/assumed here.

Great questions, Mikkel!
I am very interested in hearing more on how to define "non-Western"
anthropologists and how it differs from "non-Western" anthropology.

Hi all,
While there is a distinct chance I'm not contributing anything other
than added confusion, maybe you could elaborate/specify what you mean
by "non-western", Mariske? Specifically, I'm thinking about the
difference between being an anthropologist from a non-western country,
and being educated in a non-western academic institution. To take two
prominent examples, I would scarcely categories anthropologists like
Akhil Gupta or Arjun Appadurai as non-western anthropologists, despite
both of them having grown up in India. To my mind, both of them have
now been marinated in American academia for so long that there is
little substantial difference in their approaches compared to a given
American academic (of birth). But if you are indeed looking for an
"alternative tradition" of anthropology and proponents of it, the
scope is narrowed severely (and would raise the question whether there
is, or indeed can every be, such a thing as anthropology that is "free"
from any western influence).
To make at least one suggestion, you might look at Aníbal Quijano, who
sadly passed away last year, and his piece on "Coloniality of Power,
Eurocentrism and Latin America" (he at least got his PhD in Peru
before going off to various western Universities, if that makes any
difference).

Dear all,
In an upcoming course on "postcolonial/decolonizing anthropology" I
want to encourage students to engage with ethnographic literature
written by non-Western anthropologists. Could anybody advise me on
anthropologists from Asia, Africa and/or Latin America, and their best
writings?
In addition, does anybody have experience with teaching a similar
course, and if yes, would you mind sharing some ideas and insights
with me?
I thank you all in advance!
