*Anthropology of the "Sharing Economy"*
This roundtable discussion will gather scholars who are thinking about the
economic, infrastructural, political and technical practices that have
coalesced under the heading "sharing economy" or "gig economy," and that
have been made possible by platform technology firms, such as Airbnb, Uber,
and TaskRabbit. Our aim is to work together to develop a vocabulary for
understanding and critiquing the way that platform-mediated production in
the digital economy shapes socialities and subjects while creating markets,
value and forms of work in always situated contexts. Informed by the theme
of change over time that is central to this year's conference, we ask:
What are the key terms that anthropologists can offer for analyzing these
new systems of production and extraction? What can concepts like
commodification, labor (affective or otherwise), and gift exchange
highlight about these new economic and social forms, and what limitations
emerge that require new language of analysis? What kind of
digital infrastructures are platform companies co-producing with the
networks they rely on, and what is their relationship to the more
conventional infrastructure--housing, transportation--whose commodification
they facilitate and the urban spaces they help transform? What are the
moral and ethical implications for individuals, given that the blackboxed
algorithms of such platforms might involve personalized pricing, gender and
racial discrimination?
