Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Planetary Remote Sensing
Department of Physics, Parks Road, Oxford
Grade 7: £32,236 - £39,609 p.a.
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in planetary remote sensing and supporting laboratory measurements of asteroids and the Moon. The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration until 31 March 2022.
This project will be working on data analysis and modelling to support remote sensing measurements being made by the Diviner instrument on NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and OSIRIS-REx mission to asteroid 101955 Bennu. Informed by the new data from Diviner and OSIRIS-REx remote the successful applicant will be able to work on the development of a spectral library using our extensive laboratory facilities and help plan for future datasets such as ESA’s BepiColombo mission to Mercury.
The successful candidate will be working on analysis of data from planetary thermal emission and other remote sensing data sets, in particular for the Moon and asteroids with specific application to NASA’s OSIRIS-REx and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter missions. The role will include development and testing of spectral de-convolution models using remote sensing and laboratory data, and developing and enhancing existing laboratory experiments to derive optical properties of mineral samples and mixtures. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.
Applicants should possess, or be close to completion of a doctorate in physics, planetary/Earth science or a related field and ideally a strong background in analysis of planetary remote sensing data sets and supporting laboratory techniques. Candidates are expected to demonstrate experience in remote sensing of planetary surfaces, especially in the near and mid-infrared. Demonstrable abilities in self-motivated, laboratory experimentation, ability in the production of written reports and presentations describing scientific data analysis and laboratory work and the ability to work as part of an existing team.
