Morning all (with apologies for cross-posting)
We are looking for speakers for our Youth Summit on 28 March. The event will take place at our venue in the heart of London's vibrant West End, and will involve around 200 young people between the ages of 16 and 18. Following on from this year's Christmas Lectures topic, they will discuss "Who Are We?", and will hopefully come up with concrete recommendations around how we should respond to changing conceptions of Identity in the 21st Century*.
We are determined that this will be a day which prioritises young people's voices and so while we do think we need some "expert" input before we unleash the kids on their discussions, we don't want stuffy presentations of powerpoints with graphs and tables presented by middle-aged white guys like me. What we ARE looking for is five people who can do snappy, engaging "provocations" at a level suitable for 16-18 year olds with a variety of backgrounds and interests.
We want 5 (count 'em!) provocations: one that talks about digital identities, one that looks at gender, one that looks at sexuality, one that looks at nationality, and one that looks at ethnicity. They need to have a rigorous underpinning, but can range across science, humanities, social sciences and arts. Crucially we would love them to challenge the kids' preconceptions by also being funny... emotional... personal... whatever**.
We will pay a fee of £50 per presentation plus travel expenses. The provocations will be in the late morning of the 28th March, so you'll be needed between about 10am and 1230pm, although you are welcome to come for the whole day if you like. There will be sandwiches and coffee.
So... If you fit the bill then drop me a note off-list ([log in to unmask]) saying what your topic is and what you will need in terms of expenses. I will then try to put together a balanced line-up.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Dom

**If you think it sounds like a Science Showoff then that's exactly the vibe we want, just without the eight pints and a fight.
