De Montfort University International College (DMUIC) - External Examiner

De Montfort University International College, in collaboration with De Montfort University and Oxford International Education Group is seeking to appoint an External Examiner for their Health and Life Sciences and Pharmacy programmes including; International Year Zero in Health and Life Sciences, International Year Zero in Pharmacy, International Foundation Certificate in Health and Life Sciences and International Foundation Certificate in Pharmacy. The appointment period for this post is initially four years and will commence July 2019.

The International Year Zero in Health and Life Sciences is the first year of a four year integrated Bachelor’s degree.  The first year, equivalent to level 3, is delivered at DMUIC and comprises of Basic Microbiology for Biomedical Science, Introductory Biochemistry, Functions of Cells and Tissues, Government and Society, Chemical Principles, Introduction to Psychology, Study Skills and English for Academic Purposes modules.

The International Year Zero in Pharmacy covers Introductory Biochemistry, Chemistry, Functions of Cells and Tissues, Research Methods and Ethics, Study Skills and English for Academic Purposes modules.

The International Foundation Certificate is comprised of the same academic content and learning outcomes as the International Year Zero, however, it is recruited to as one year stand –alone qualification, successful completion of which allows students to progress to the first Year of  a variety of DMU degrees.

Main Responsibilities of an External Examiner: 
• Scrutinise and advise on curriculum development and design
• Review sample work and decide whether the assessment of students is fair
• Confirm that DMUIC’s and DMU’s awards are comparable in standards to awards granted by other institutions and comply with national standards
• Attend relevant Programme Assessment Boards 
• Submit an annual report detailing providing pertinent information and assessing the observed practices 

The External Examiner will receive £360 on completion of an annual report, and claim form, at the end of year. In addition, External Examiners will receive a visit fee of £90 per visit for a maximum of three visits, and will be reimbursed for any reasonable expenses. 

Criteria for appointment:

External examiners will be expected to have: 
• Knowledge and understanding of UK sector agreed reference points for the maintenance of academic standards and assurance and enhancement of quality. 
• Competence and experience in the field covered by the programme of study, or parts thereof. 
• Relevant academic qualifications/professional qualifications to at least the level of the qualification being externally examined, and/or extensive practitioner experience where appropriate. 
• Academic and teaching experience at the level at which assessment is taking place including competence and experience relating to designing and operating a variety of assessment tasks appropriate to the subject and operating assessment procedures (either externally or internally). External examiners from outside the higher education system, for example, from industry or the professions, may be appointed where appropriate; but each board shall have at least one external examiner who has recent examining experience at the relevant level and who is familiar with the standards required for comparable programmes. 
• Sufficient standing, credibility and breadth of experience within the discipline to be able to command the respect of academic peers and, where appropriate, professional peers. 
• Familiarity with the standard to be expected of students to achieve the award that is to be assessed. 
• Fluency in English, and where programmes are delivered and assessed in languages other than English, fluency in the relevant language(s) (unless other secure arrangements are in place to ensure that external examiners are provided with the information to make their judgements). 
• Met the applicable criteria set out by professional, statutory or regulatory bodies. 
• Awareness of current developments in the design and delivery of relevant curricula. 
• Competence and experience relating to the enhancement of the student learning experience.
• Although previous external examining experience would be preferable, it is not essential for this role Please note that the successful candidate will need to be based in the UK.

N.B. External Examiners should not normally be appointed if they have had close and persistent contact with a current member of staff of the collaborative partner at any time during the previous five years.
