Project Conservator: The B/Y Memoranda Book project 
Location: Borthwick Institute for Archives, University of York Fixed Term. 
Six week contract (30 days). 
Salary: £3,366 – £6,737 (actual salary rate) 

Following a generous grant from the Pilgrim Trust through the National Manuscripts Conservation Trust, we are in a position to offer a short-term conservation position working on one of our medieval manuscript volumes. The B/Y Memoranda Book is one of the foundation documents of the medieval city of York. Together with its sister volume A/Y (conserved by an NMCT grant in around 2000) and the first Register of Freemen, B/Y forms part of the earliest surviving records of the city – at that time the second in England in terms of importance. 

The volume belongs to City of York Council and forms part of its archive collections, currently managed by Explore York Libraries and Archives. Rental of studio space is included in our grant funding, separate to the salary above, and as we do not have our own studio, the work will be carried out at the Borthwick Institute for Archives, University of York. 

As a qualified, experienced ICON-accredited conservator (or equivalent) with demonstrable experience of working with medieval records, you will work independently to carry out the recommendations in the treatment specification (available on our website). You should also have excellent organisational and time management skills. Experience of working collaboratively with professional or specialist peers, who may have different or competing priorities, is highly desirable. Experience of project work would be beneficial but is not necessary. 

The treatment specification has been approved by the NMCT Trustees, and must be followed during the course of this project. The specification also includes a breakdown of the project work and an estimation of costs. 

This position can be offered on a either a contracted or freelance basis, reflected in the salary band above. Terms of employment will be discussed at the interview stage.
