medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
apologies for cross-posting
I have just uploaded to my online photo archive 91 images from Belgrade
and Lille.
The Belgrade page
www.KornbluthPhoto.com/Epitaphios.html
is mostly dedicated to the Byzantine Epitaphios of King Stefan Uroš II
Milutin, around 1300, a large embroidery of Christ in the Tomb, with
Slavonic inscriptions. A kind curator at the museum gave me
extraordinary access, so I was able to shoot many details not normally
seen. Also on the page is the encomium to the martyr Prince Lazar
Hrebeljanović embroidered for (by?) the nun Efimiya (Jelena Mrnjavčević)
in 1402, important for its Slavonic text as well as its craftsmanship.
For Lille, one page
www.KornbluthPhoto.com/LilleHospice.html
is on the Hospice Comtesse, originally founded as a hospital by Jeanne
de Flandre in 1237. Surviving buildings are C15-18, and now display a
C16 oak chest with the Last Supper, some wonderful C18 wall tiles, and a
C17 linen press, among other things.
A short page
www.KornbluthPhoto.com/LilleNDTreille.html
offers images of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille, Lille, a
Neo-Gothic structure with a noteworthy late C20 west façade.
best to all,
Genevra
