Public Art and Sex(uality)
Special Issue for Public Art Dialogue
Call for Papers & Artists’ Projects
Submission Deadline: August 1, 2019
Guest Editor: Martin Zebracki
This is the first issue of Public Art Dialogue (PAD) to examine the unique relationship between art in the public realm, sexuality, and sex. Public art with sex(uality) aspects, such as the recent ‘queen’s vagina’ by Anish Kapoor in the Palace of Versailles gardens and Paul McCarthy’s recurring inflatable ‘butt plug’, has met heated resistance and social media hysteria. Public discourse and controversy about such sexually-inflected category of public artwork often revolve around perceived explicit visual content, intentions of artists and commissioners, the ethics of commissioning, the nature or lack of public consultation, and the legitimacy informed by the timescale of the artwork (e.g., fleeting appearance vs. lasting legacy).
Contributions are welcomed by scholars and professionals across all stages of career. Submissions may address multi-medial types of ‘sexualised’ public artworks in the past and present. In particular, they may interrogate how they have drawn members of the public out of their comfort zones. Contributions may examine historic and contemporary practices and contextualisations of engagement with public art and sexuality across real-life and digitally mediated platforms of debate and contestation. They may ask how public engagement challenges the powerful structures of the art world and the political sphere and gives way to public agency in new, revolutionary ways; questions sexual / heteropatriarchal normativities; and offers alternative readings of / spaces for sexual identity expressions and for their radical ‘queerying’ (i.e., queer citizenship).
This Special Issue invites original submissions for all sections of PAD, including articles, essays, conversational dialogues, and book reviews. Expanded versions of previously published works will not be considered.
Moreover, this Special Issue invites Artists’ Projects, which are unique artworks and / or art interventions designed specifically for the pages of PAD.
