Call for papers: RGS-IBG Annual International Conference, Royal Geographical Society, London, 28–30 August 2018
Session title: Geography and Popular Culture: Hopeful Stories in Troubled Times(?)
Session convenors: Dr Alex Hastie and Dr Joe Thorogood (Coventry University)
Popular culture has long offered geographers an accessible and interesting route to understanding some of the world’s most complex problems, everyday life and the ways people see their place in the world. Film, television, comic books, magazines, music, and their audiences give us insights into issues such as racism, national identity, masculinity, and the urban condition. Defined loosely by its mainstream and commercial exploits, as well as its accessibility to the masses, popular culture’s value has often been contested and overlooked by geographers, in spite of the power and influence it exudes in society. The study of popular culture in geography has been most prevalent in the area of ‘popular geopolitics’ (Sharp, 1993; Crampton and Power, 2005; Dittmer and Dodds, 2008; Carter and Dodds, 2011), through which the popular is engaged conceptually, and the popular sphere (primarily film) taken seriously as an object of study for geographers.
This session seeks to take the study of popular culture further, particularly in this present moment of blurred lines between fiction and reality, ‘fake news’ and celebrity politics and politicians, and to ask what hope, if any, can popular culture offer in these troubled times? We invite papers particularly focusing on (though by no means limited to) conceptual contributions to the study of popular culture within geography, through objects and topics such as:
- Affect and Emotion
- Audiences and Fandom
- Celebrity
- Comic books
- Film
- Geopolitics
- Literature
- Magazines
- Music
- Performance and Identity
- Race
- Social Class
- TV
Please send abstracts of no more than 250 words to Alex Hastie ([log in to unmask]) by 8th February, including a title, affiliation, and email address.
