The Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge invites applications for a 3-year funded PhD studentship under the supervision of Dr Matthew Machin-Autenrieth, as part of the ERC- funded project ‘Past and Present Musical Encounters across the Strait of Gibraltar’ (www.musicalencounters.co.uk).
We are looking for a highly motivated, bright and enthusiastic student to join the project. The selected student’s research might explore the following or related areas:
• The role of music as a form of intercultural dialogue between host and immigrant communities (including both institutional and ‘grassroots’ projects)
• The role of music in acts of cultural diplomacy between North Africa and Southern Europe
• The colonial legacies that influence music making across the Mediterranean
• Music’s relationship with North African transnationalism in Southern Europe
The studentship will provide a stipend covering maintenance and fee costs at the current “Home” rate. Non-EU students and those from EU countries who do not meet the residency requirements may be eligible for a stipend covering fees-only. We encourage minorities and women to apply, including those coming from the geographical areas covered by the project.
Please note: For non-EU students who do not meet the eligibility for maintenance costs, UK funding deadlines close early in 2019. If you wish to apply for external funding, please contact for more information.
