Hi Sheena and Jenny,
Related to this I am hearing that some local units are implementing routine prophylactic drugs in normal labouring women to reduce volume and acidity of stomach contents. I think the last Cochrane review on this was back in 2006 and highlighted insufficient evidence for the practice. Has something changed or are we slipping back into non evidence based ‘management’, I use management because the woman’s voice seems absent.
Cheers

Thank you Jenny
I knew about NICE and agree it seems like an ‘old’ issue!
I’ll share the Cochrane review with the midwife, much appreciated x
Very best wishes

Hello Sheena
This is one of those things that remains frustrating as the evidence has been around for so long and therefore there is little more that needs to be found out! I am assuming you do mean for women who are experiencing normal labour? The Cochrane guidance is here : https://www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD003930.pub3/full
And of course it is in the NICE guidelines:
Inform the woman that she may drink during established labour and that isotonic drinks may be more beneficial than water. [2007]
1.7.7 Inform the woman that she may eat a light diet in established labour unless she has received opioids or she develops risk factors that make a general anaesthetic more likely. [2007]
However it should be her choice....
Best wishes
Jenny

Subject: Eating in Labour
Dear friends
I have just heard of a maternity unit in Northern Ireland which doesn’t ‘allow’ women to eat in labour.
Does anyone have current evidence on the topic please?
Very best wishes
Sheena
