Dear all, please see below our call for papers. We are open to a diverse range of responses to the call.
Session Title: The ‘European City’ - Spatial Imaginaries and Everyday Realities. EUGEO Conference, NUI Galway, 15th - 18th of May, 2019 https://www.eugeo2019.eu/
Session Convenors: Philip Lawton (Trinity College Dublin), Ulf Strohmayer (NUI Galway)
In both everyday discourse and academic debates, representations of European cities can be seen to play out through a number of overlapping themes and ideals. These range from the idealization of a compact settlement pattern that is often associated with urbane forms of interaction often labelled as the ‘European City’, to more chaotic forms of representation of car-oriented forms of mobility associated with urban sprawl and congestion. Furthermore, in recent years, the idealization of central spaces of European cities have been challenged by the realities of severe housing crises. Embedded within these realities are different governance structures that, to greater or lesser degrees, can either mitigate against such challenges, or exacerbate them. Furthermore, the extent to which cities seek 'best practice' from other places via the adaption of particular policies ads yet another layer of complexity to the politics of urban space. With these overlapping challenges in mind, this session calls for proposals that deal with the diverse array of challenges facing contemporary European cities. We are open to contributions along a wide-array of themes and topics, including, but not limited to, urban inequality, gentrification, historic ideals of the 'European city', contemporary challenges around infrastructure, urban governance, and policy mobilities. Contributions can either be conceptual/theoretical or draw upon case-study material.
Please send your abstracts (maximum 250 words) to Philip Lawton ([log in to unmask]) by January 21st 2019.
