Dear Colleagues,
Several times in the past few days, I’ve received requests for advice on journals, book publishers, and conferences for which universities and design schools should award publication credit.
For research journals, you’ll find a list of 40 journals in the article
Quality perceptions of design journals: The design scholars’ perspective
Design Studies, Volume 33, Issue 1, January 2012, Pages 4-23
Gerda Gemser, Cees de Bont, Paul Hekkert, Ken Friedman
doi:10.1016/j.destud.2011.09.001
Since this is a peer-reviewed list gathered from a broad survey of the design field, it seems to me that anyone can use it as a responsible guide. If we were to replicate the study today, it is likely that one would see journals that have emerged since then, especially Design Science from Cambridge University Press, Sciences du Design from Presses Universitaires de France, and She Ji - The Journal of Design, Economics, and Innovation from Tongji University Press and Elsevier.

Much design research is interdisciplinary, so one must give due consideration to journal articles in the serious journals of other fields.
For the best academic presses and university press book publishers, I’d suggest using the Norwegian list — now the common Nordic list. You’ll find more information here:

For conferences, I’d say you can rely on any conference sponsored by the member associations of IASDSR
https://iasdr.net
Many forms of design research are cross-disciplinary, so I’d also accept the conferences organised by not-for-profit academic research societies in almost any field. I tend not to trust conferences organised by for-profit conference organising companies — their main purpose is to attract fee-paying presenters. Most of them have stories about how their goal is service to the field, creating opportunity for young scholars, etc. But their business model involves maximising attendance. All conferences suffer from the break-even factor, even those of the not-for-profit academic societies … but at least their goal is breaking even, not maximising attendance with no respect to quality. This means that they draw the cut-off line at break-even, while for-profit conferences have no cut-off point, even when the venue is full.
There is a special case for invitational conferences. These tend to be focused conferences that invite participation based on expertise and publications. If a conference is truly invitational — no fees charged — I’d give full credit to any conference sponsored by a university in the top 500 listings of ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities), the Times Higher Ed list, or the QS list. For invitational conferences, there are three levels, though I don’t know quite how to account for them. The base level is an invitational conference with no conference fee. The next level up is a conference where the host university pays all expenses at the venue including accommodations. The highest level is an invitational conference where the host university pays all expenses at the venue including accommodations, as well as travel to and from the conference. When invitational conferences are funded by external grant funding, that should also be taken into account.
A friend of mine recently suggested that my use of such words as “serious” may only reflect my own views. He may be right about being too judgmental about journals. But that was also the complaint that many people had about Beall’s excellent list that warned people about predatory publishers and predatory journals.
There is some kind of border between that which is worthy and that which is not. It is not always easy to define. At some point, one must judge. One role of the professoriate is that of making judgments. This means that one role of the professoriate inevitably requires us to be wrong from time to time, making responsible mistakes in an effort to provide reasonable answers to good questions.
At a time when universities are ever more concerned with the quality of publications, it is unfortunate that few schools and doctoral programs in design help researchers and PhD students to understand the different choices they face in publishing. This means considering, for example, why one should or shouldn’t publish in a specific journal, why someone should consider publishing an article in a solid but less recognised venue — provided that they also publish in one of the journals covered in SCIE, SSCI, or AHCI. And why one should never release a PhD thesis as a book with Dr Muller Verlag, and so on.
Obviously, this requires judgment and no one will share completely the views of anyone else. But I see that people’s careers suffer needlessly from the failure of design professors to help younger folks wrestle with these issues. University VCs and Presidents — and especially the DVCRs and Vice Presidents for Research — are ruthless in their judgments and the ways that they read a CV for sign-off on hiring and promotion. Lacking appropriate guidance, design people often lose opportunities, promotions, and jobs in this highly competitive world.
Now that it seems to be time once again to consider and evaluate publications, I’m posting this to the list as well as responding to individual queries. For that matter, I will now use this email over the next few months when people query me directly.
In the light of criticism from my friend, I note that this is merely my opinion, based on the evidence and reasons I provide. If someone else offers better advice, take it.
Best regards,
Ken
