A postdoctoral position in experimental physical chemistry is open in the Gas-Phase Chemical Dynamics group at Argonne National Laboratory with Dr. Kirill Prozument. The project is aimed at understanding the chemical dynamics and kinetics of combustion-related reactions using the chirped-pulse Fourier transform millimeter-wave (CP-FTmmW) spectroscopy. Two unique CP-FTmmW experiments have been recently developed in our laboratory. Thermally-initiated complex chemistry is studied in a cw flash-pyrolysis reactor using the W-band BrightSpec spectrometer. Laser-induced quantum state-dependent kinetics is investigated in a flow-tube reactor using the E-band spectrometer built upon an original design. Modeling of the measured reaction products' branching ratios and vibrational population distributions is a key to understanding the underlying dynamic effects. Argonne Gas-Phase Chemical Dynamics group provides a unique collaborative environment for experimentalists and theoreticians, and we are also open for outside-Argonne collaborations.
A successful candidate will have a PhD in Chemistry, Physics or a related field and experience in one of the areas of molecular spectroscopy. In-depth knowledge and experience in pure rotational spectroscopy is an advantage, but is not required. Experience in vacuum techniques and laser spectroscopy is desirable. Programming skills for automating data acquisition and analysis, particularly in Python and Matlab, is a plus.
