Abstract:
Traffic safety has emerged as a global public health issue. Timely and accurate identification of high-risk locations can result in efficient allocation of government resources for safety treatments. However, most existing efforts to identify high-risk locations require sufficient crash data, which generally takes a few years to collect. A more proactive and time-efficient approach is based on surrogate safety measures (SSMs), which can assess safety by capturing the more frequent "near-crash" situations. Connected vehicles (CVs) are generally equipped with devices such as GPS loggers and cameras and can act as mobile sensors in detecting risks in the road network. Rich information generated by CVs can be used to obtain SSMs and thus detect high-risk locations in a timely manner. Large-scale CV data collected in Ann Arbor, Michigan is used as a case study. Results show that risks captured by CVs have a high correlation with crash data and it is promising to use CV data for proactive safety management.
