Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the Global Reconstruction of Paleo-Subduction Zones
Department of Earth Sciences, South Parks Road, Oxford
Grade 7: £32,236 - £39,609 with a discretionary range to £43,267 p.a.
The department seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work with Professor Karin Sigloch. The DEEPTIME project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC), interprets seismic tomographic images of subducted slabs the upper and lower mantle to infer the spatiotemporal evolution of paleo-trenches back to Mesozoic times, especially in oceanic areas.
The PDRA will develop and implement a method that extracts quantitative plate boundary information from global reconstructions with continuously closing plate boundaries, and to use this information to estimate plate driving forces back in time. The aim is to develop strategies for refining hypothesised paleo-trench geometries such that a reconstruction satisfies trench pull constraints while evolving self-consistently. The PDRA will be responsible for conducting independent and collaborative research within the interdisciplinary DEEPTIME project group, and for timely publication of results in peer-reviewed journals.
The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent in geophysics or the geological sciences at the time of starting the post; research experience in global tectonics and quantitative plate reconstructions; computer programming skills, ideally in Python; excellent ability to communicate and relate to other project stake holders; and demonstrated ability to plan and conduct research alone and in a team.
For further details of the role and selection criteria, please see the Job description.
The deadline for applications is 12.00 midday on Thursday 22 November 2018. Interviews will be early December 2018.
