Title
The Industry of Perfection. Transnational Circuits in the Marketing and Consumption of Cosmetic and Hormonal Enhancement.
Short abstract
This panel aims to identify 1. aspirations and practices of cosmetic and hormonal enhancement, closely entangled with negotiations over gender, class, age and ethnicity; as well as 2. the main transnational trajectories of products and techniques aimed at improving individual characteristics according to global and local models of beauty, social and sexual performance.
Long abstract
The market of aesthetic and hormonal enhancement biotechnologies is one of the most active and profitable of the world, counting with intense transcontinental networks, both in the diffusion and consolidation of ideal representations of perfection and in the commerce and circulation of pharmaceutical, medical and surgical products, techniques and practices. Within the last decades, the use of biomedical artifacts destined to improve the appearance and performance became of paramount importance, bringing to the fore new forms of subjectification based on the personal investment made by means of an ever growing range of body transformations. This panel aims to 1) discuss the different dimensions associated with the employment of technoscientific resources - specially those coming from the biomedical field - destined to improve individual features according global and local representations of 'good appearance', 'beauty', social and sexual performance, modernity and success; 2) inquiry the main routes of cosmetic medical tourism and the transnational trajectories of products and procedures; 3) portray the consumers and their aspirations for enhancement, in constant negotiation with gender, class, age and ethnicity variables. We invite researchers to submit ethnographic work engaging with cosmetic medical tourism, the narratives and practices of self-improvement, the moral economies and the main transnational routes of the industry of perfection.
*The panel is an initiative of the research project *"EXCEL. In pursuit of
excellence"*- *PI Chiara Pussetti*, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for
Science and Technology (PTDC/SOC-ANT/30572/2017) and hosted by the ICS -
University of Lisbon.
EXCEL tackles enhancement technologies as bio-investment practices to
promote personal competitiveness according to a logic of excellence,
reading bodily and cognitive alterations as processes of self-making in
shifting economies.
