The inaugural Max Gluckman Lecture in honour of of the first professor of social anthropology at Manchester and founder of the social anthropology department will be held November 6th at 6.00 p.m. in the second floor Boardroom of the Arthur Lewis Building at the University of Manchester. At 5.00 p.m. before the lecture, there will be a reception at the ground floor Common Room in the same building, both lecture and reception are open to all.
The inaugural lecture on ‘The Enigma of Max Gluckman, will be presented by Professor Robert Gordon, University of Vermont, and the author of a new biography of the same title as the lecture. The lecture will illuminate a whole era of modern, British social sciences through a portrait in depth of one of the most controversial anthropologists of his time: a bold anti-colonial activist, a critic of establishment views in the social sciences and in public life, and a master of classic ethnography on the judicial process in Africa. His inter-disciplinary impact resonated famously through the seminar he led over many decades in collaboration with Professor Ely Devons (Economics), Professor William Mackenzie (Government) and Professor Dorothy Emmett (Philosophy).
