*Short abstract*:
This panel welcomes theoretical and empirical contributions about
processes of self-fashioning in different social areas – education,
religion, work, sports, art, etc – in order to propose a reflection
about the articulations and negotiations of ‘projects of the self’
between individual agency and social models of human realization.
*Long abstract*:
In this panel we propose to focus on strategies of self-fashioning in
relation with normative views of desirable futures and subjectivities.
We seek to explore the tension between hegemonic “projects of the self”
in contemporary times and the making of subjectivities capable of
reflecting the individual’s agency and his ability to adapt to them. We
draw primarily on Michel Foucault’s concept of Technologies of the Self
as activities meant to transform oneself into an ethical agent, paying
also close attention to other authors who echo this concept in distinct
disciplines and contexts: Marcel Mauss’s Techniques of the Body as
“efficient” behavioral procedures that are passed down through socials
groups; Stephen Greenblatt’s Self-Fashioning as applied in literary
studies to the idealized self-shaping of historical social classes; or
Peter Sloterdijk’s Anthropotechnics, self-molding practices that enable
to experiment models of realization and challenge the limits of the
human condition. We welcome contributions from researchers working on
education, religion, work, sports, art, etc., where projects of personal
transformation are put into practice through learning and unlearning,
accreting and eroding, shaping and framing of the self against multiple
backdrops of social codes, ethical shared goals, or idealized projects
of being human.
Looking forward for your submissions,
Lisa Lazzarini and Pedro Soares
