Regarding the current state of the My Grades (web, not within the app), I completely agree that the current state of this page (with the 2016 theme on, anyhow) is not well designed. At one point it was more obvious I think that the grade item titles were links, but now that the default anchor colour is a dark muted blue and inexplicably, the mouse pointer no longer changes, this is far from true.

We’re currently testing the following css to attempt to help with this, which might help some.

Dan Levin | University of Manchester

/* Makes it more obvious that the title of graded items is a link and adds text to this for clarity */
div#grades_wrapper>div.graded_item_row>div.gradable>a {
cursor: pointer;
color: #a268c1;
text-decoration: underline;
}
div#grades_wrapper>div.graded_item_row>div.gradable>a::after {
content: " (View Grade Details)"
}
div#grades_wrapper>div.graded_item_row>div.gradable>a:visited {
color: #1874a4;
}

/* adds text around the feedback bubble to make it standout */
.grade-feedback::after {
content: "(View Summary Feedback)";
color: #006eff;
text-decoration: underline;
padding-left: 0.5em;
font-size:11px;
}
.grade-feedback::visited {
color: #1874a4;
}
/* adds text around the grade number to make it standout */
fieldset#step1 + div.clearfix>div>table.attachments td>a[href^="/webapps/assessment/review/review.jsp?"] {

Hi Adam,
I agree with the points below; the other aspect to consider is the mobile app and how this links into My Grades. In the app, grades are even more prioritised and there are inconsistencies in how feedback is presented. I think this could have a knock on effect with how students interact with My Grades.

For example, a student might see their new grade for an assignment via the Marks section in the mobile app. They tap on this grade and can see overall comments; below that is a copy of their submitted file which they can view but which does not include annotations. Thus if they are primarily a mobile app user they might not realise there is more feedback if they log into Blackboard via a browser and might miss this. Similar issues apply to blogs, journals, tests etc.

Tying into query 1 below then we have found students expect more functionality from the mobile app and can't necessarily be expected to understand the very complex distinction between My Grades in the desktop and My Grades in the app. More parity would really help with this.

But is My Grades something they are likely to revamp in future updates to 9.1 given the focus on Ultra? The changes in recent releases seem quite incremental (e.g. decimal point numbers etc.)

Kind regards,
Kevin O'Connor

Subject: Finding feedback in My Grades - poor UX design

Hi All,
As part of our EMA programme we are looking into whether the My Grades screen can be improved and how other institutions are handling the delivery of online feedback through Blackboard 9.1 to get around the poor interface design. I am interested to know if this is a concern for other institutions and how widespread.

Has anyone had issues reported to them that students are not realising they have feedback on their assessments when looking in My Grades due to the inconsistent way students see they have feedback available using different tools for assessment.
The main complaint we have received is that it is not clear that the title of the assignment is a link to access the feedback and the grade is prioritised.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has:

1. Found this to be a significant issue for their institution?
2. Undertaken work to overcome or get around this to present grades and feedback differently to students? (for example, I think UWE has created their own feedback dashboard to centralise access to feedback.)
3. Developed communications or support that has mitigated the issue?

Examples of the different ways feedback is indicated and accessed:

* Blackboard assignments - you see the View feedback (speech bubble) if there is text has been entered in the Feedback to Learner field and the View Rubric link if one has been attached. But you need to click on the title of the assignment to see any inline comments added in Box.

* Bb Tests - you click on the title of the test to open the 'View Attempts' screen and then need to click on the actual Grade of the test to view the feedback on the questions.

* Turnitin assignment - only the grade is shown and you need to click on the assignment title that takes you to an interim screen called 'Review Assignment' from which you need to click on an icon beside 'My paper' to open the Feedback Studio. It is then necessary to click the 'Instructor feedback' button to make the feedback display.

Thanks in advance for any advice or information

Kind Regards,

Adam Bailey
