RAS Public Lecture: Adventures in Space – 16th October 2018
Dr Suzie Imber, University of Leicester
Dr Suzie Imber is an Associate Professor of Planetary Science at the University of Leicester. She specialises in studying space weather; understanding the impact of the solar wind on the magnetised planets, in particular the Earth and Mercury. Suzie is a Co-Investigator on the X-ray spectrometer on board the joint ESA/JAXA BepiColombo spacecraft launching in October 2018 and arriving at Mercury in 2025.
She is also a high altitude mountaineer and explorer, and the winner of the BBC2 series Astronauts: Do You Have What it Takes? In this talk she will discuss her journey into becoming a scientist, and the challenge of juggling her career with training as an elite athlete. In 2016 she used the University supercomputer to discover many unclimbed mountains in the Andes, and every year sets off to scale more of these peaks, sometimes even finding Incan ruins on the summits! Suzie is a co-investigator on one of the instruments heading to Mercury on board the BepiColombo spacecraft, launching in October, so she will talk a little about the instrument, the mission, and the unanswered questions surrounding Mercury’s composition, evolution and magnetic field. Finally Suzie will present some of the challenges she faced as part of the BBC Astronauts series, and where the journey has taken her since the show.
***Please note that due to the popularity of our public lunchtime lectures, we have made them ticketed events. Unfortunately this action is also in part due to staff being subject to unacceptable behaviour from some members of the public unable to gain access to the lectures. The RAS will not tolerate this kind of behaviour and perpetrators will not be welcome at any future RAS events.***

How we’ll live on Mars
Monday 12 November, 7.00pm – 8.30pm
Humans will soon make their first trip to Mars. How will we get there? What challenges will we have to overcome and what spectacular sights await the successful? In a talk packed full of stunning visuals and the latest scientific thinking, astronomy author Colin Stuart will take you on a journey to the Red Planet to witness the majesty of a Martian sunset.

Fun Palaces 2018 at The Royal Astronomical Society
he Royal Astronomical Society will be opening its doors Saturday, October 6th, 2018 as part of Fun Palaces 2018, hosting two talks by the Creativity and Curiosity Team who bring art and science together to create beautiful space science-inspired art.
There will be a talk at 12.30pm, repeated at 3.30pm. There will also be hands-on activities in the courtyard from 12pm to 5pm for all ages, featuring fun space crafts, science experiments, and demonstrations.

X-ray astronomy and fundamental physics 24 – 25 October 2018
Kavli Royal Society Centre, Chicheley Hall, Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, MK16 9JJ
Theo Murphy international scientific meeting organised by Professor Joseph Conlon, Dr David Marsh and Dr Helen Russell.
The use of X-ray astronomy for fundamental physics has been seen in two areas; dark matter through the 3.5 keV line, and in searches for axion-like particles. In advance of satellite technological leaps, this meeting will bring together astronomy and particle physics communities with a focus on the ability of existing and future X-ray observatories to search for and constrain fundamental physics. It will explore the opportunities open to astronomers to probe fundamental physics with both existing archival data and also with future satellites such as ATHENA.

Richard Carrington observed the powerful solar flare of September 1st 1859 which is now known as the Carrington event. The notebooks containing his observations and sketch of the flare have been loaned by the RAS Library and Archives to the Science Museum as part of a major new exhibition about the Sun which opens on 6th October https://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/see-and-do/the-sun-living-with-our-star
