Dear PSCI-COM,
Note: This opportunity would be ideal for people based in Scotland, with some bioinformatics experience, who are already receiving salary or stipend and are looking for a good opportunity perform some public engagement activity as part of their normal duties - for example PhD students, postdocs, lecturers and other university or research institute staff. We are able to pay travel expenses, accommodation and subsistence where required, but not salary.
We are looking for help delivering our 4273pi bioinformatics education project - one of the largest bioinformatics-at-school projects in the world.
We have visited more than 50 secondary schools around Scotland, bringing a free bioinformatics workshop to Higher Biology, Higher Human Biology and Advanced Higher Biology classes. We have a busy programme of visits this academic year.
At the moment we are particularly short of volunteers in the Glasgow area, though we welcome volunteers based anywhere in Scotland.
For some further details on the project, see:

Volunteers should be proficient in basic bioinformatics. Our school workshop focuses on using and interpreting sequence similarity searches, using BLAST software both via the NCBI Web site and at the Linux command-line (Raspberry Pi).
All workshops are presented by at least two people. At your first school visits, the workshop would be led by an experienced presenter. Your own duties would be similar to demonstrating at an undergraduate computer practical.
If you would like to be added to our list of volunteers, please let me know. Include a brief outline of your experience with public engagement (if any), academic background and where you are based. Include the name of your supervisor where appropriate (e.g. PhD students).
If you have any questions, please get in touch.
Thank you,
Daniel Barker [log in to unmask]
