Dear all,
Warning: this contribution to the list is not directly related to PhD studies. It is related to design.
I have always admired the rhetorical flourishes of Sottsass. In line with his challenging titles that start with something like "design this and that and the other", I found myself perplexed with the idea of designing an object that talks to the theme of "Rascisim, Sexisim and Indifference".
What I came up with was a telegraph pole which seems to me to be logically pure just as is a floor as a floor talks to the theme of "sanity".
In line with this poetic, I will tell a little story.
Sitting in my back yard, pondering my decision to stand down from my teaching and retire after 30 years because I find it impossible to lecture in ways that are not in conflict with institutional codes of conduct and policies, I noticed, in our last surviving gum tree, the one that outlasted the most recent cyclone, that a branch appeared unusual. Over the years, in certain seasons, I have been surprised by a tawny frogmouth (they look like owls but they are not owls), at night, perched on our clothes line. Could this be such a bird, disguised, in daylight, asleep? Sure enough, it is a tawny frogmouth. For all I know, this bird has been sleeping in our tree for years, unnoticed. It has been there every day for weeks now. It may be nesting.
cheers
keith
