On the 3rd of December the University of Edinburgh, the National Library of Scotland and the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) are hosting a free day-long IIIF Showcase. The event will provide those new to IIIF, and those experienced with the framework, a hands-on day filled with plenty of opportunities for discussions around sharing digital heritage collections with the world. In the afternoon there will be an archives specific session that list members may be interested in attending. It will be great to have a substantial presence from the UK archives community. The IIIF has recently started a new Archives Community Group, which is actively looking at the best ways to make archival resources available over IIIF.
IIIF is a set of shared specifications for interoperable digital image functionality. It enables advanced interactivity for end users, such as fast rich zoom and pan; manipulation of size, scale, rotation and quality; annotation; assembly and comparison; citation and sharing. There's lots more information at https://iiif.io/. If you've never seen any IIIF image functionality used with archives, here's a couple of examples:
Boston Public, Library Anti-Slavery Collection - https://www.digitalcommonwealth.org/search/commonwealth:7s75fx18h
Duke University, W. Duke, Sons & Co. Advertising Materials, 1880-1910 - https://repository.duke.edu/dc/wdukesons/dscsi02176
The day will start with an introduction to IIIF with presentations from various international institutions, who will showcase their latest developments. There will be various afternoon sessions, including the archive session, before everyone is brought back together for a reception at St Cecilia’s Hall.
Please register soon if you would like to attend, as capacity is limited.
