Cross Government Engagement Lead
The National Archives is currently undertaking a comprehensive refresh of its service offering to government with a focus on driving compliance under the Public Records Act, as well as developing its second generation digital archive. Central to this work is strengthening The National Archives' strategic influence via the flagship Information Management Assessment programme, and in key cross-government initiatives, such as the Better Information for Better Government programme with the Cabinet Office.
The Government Audience Directorate is centred on The National Archives' statutory responsibility to provide advice, guidance and supervision to government departments, concerning their management, appraisal, selection, review and eventual transfer to The National Archives of their historical records. Without records, we could not hold government to account, carry out pioneering research or learn from the past. Whether they are websites, the evidence heard by inquiries or algorithms which support decision-making, the survival of our (increasingly digital) public records is vital. Your work will help ensure that today's records are accessible to the next generation of citizens, researchers and historians.
About the role
The Cross Government Engagement Lead will work jointly to run and shape the Information Management Assessment programme, taking turns to lead assessments which will involve:
* Coordinating the engagement with the department ensuring senior buy in to the assessment, report and the follow on action plan. Owning the report through consultation with department and our own CEO's office through to reporting to the department's permanent secretary.
* Gaining access to relevant supporting documentation, evaluating this in advance of the assessment and ensuring that the department pulls together an appropriate interview schedule
* Continuing to build a picture of the department's IM capabilities going into the IMA by consulting with TNA colleagues and reviewing evidence such as the Information Management Report
* Establishing and briefing a TNA interview team with the right cross-section of expertise
* Distilling the evidence gathered via documentation and face-to-face interviews into a concise RAG rated report based on the IMA framework; highlighting good practice as well as areas of risk aligned to supporting and meaningful recommendations.
By leading and contributing to IMAs the Cross Government Engagement Leads will have an unparalleled overview of the Information Management Landscape in Government and as such are best placed to feed into cross government initiatives such as the Better Information for Better Government programme. This roles will be on one day a week combined secondment to the programme in order to provide subject matter expertise in areas such as information management risk.
The cross-government engagement lead will share intelligence and contacts with the Head of Cross Government Engagement, contributing to other engagement activities such as cross-government discussion forums and events and ultimately seeking out new groups and spaces within Government to push the National Archives dual compliance and digital records agenda. There is huge potential for development in this area which is core to The National Archives new, refreshed offer to Government.
The Cross Government Engagement team is a small, passionate and dynamic team and there is also the opportunity to line manage the Government Audience Project Support Officer. The roles will report to the Head of Cross Government Engagement within the Government Audience Directorate.
