I meant only that you seemed to be saying something similar to what Larkin said about jazz. I don’t think contemporary jazz is that ‘dumbed down’; in fact some might be, but a lot is highly skillful & there are a lot of different streams. I listen still to material from the past & also some latest records. It’s interesting to hear the ‘new’ ‘lost’ Coltrane & hear the future in some ways, that’s the now, but many younger (than he) are doing fascinating work, making great sounds (to me).
Similarly, although I still reread a lot of what to me are great poets of the past, I still find some terrific stuff among new publications, new writers…
