Carnival Performance Institute - 2019 Programme

The Dance & Performance Institute invite you and your students of Caribbean history, art and culture to join us for the 3rd iteration of the Carnival Performance Institute, with two-week and three-week sessions between 3 January and 3 March 2019 in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The Carnival Performance Institute’s workshops, performance studies, and informal dialogues run alongside Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival. The Carnival Performance Institute has engaged individual professional artists and scholars, Middlebury College (Vermont), and University of Calgary (Canada) undergraduate students of dance, theatre, anthropology, architecture and visual art. This program was established to position Carnival at the centre of performance studies and engage the local and international community in study and conversation around:
• how Carnival performance express unique histories and events, and intersect with nationalism, transnationalism, and global mobilities
• how gender is played out in contemporary Carnival performance
• how the local context of power and meaning influence the ways in which participants think of their experience
Carnival season in Trinidad & Tobago officially begins after Christmas Day on 25 December and culminates in two days (Carnival Monday & Tuesday) of celebration just before Lent. The dates of Trinidad & Tobago’s 2019 Carnival are 4th and 5th March. Guest artists, lecturers, professors, philosophers, mas women and men, designers, and cultural workers create an incredible resource for participants of every Carnival Performance Institute.
