Over the last few weeks, we have received feedback from our library subscribers regarding the metered paywall evaluation on News from Science (news stories posted on our daily news site, www.sciencemag.org/news, which includes Latest News, Science Insider, Science Shots, and Sifter).
AAAS introduced its metered access evaluation in July 2017. At that time, visitors who read more than 10 articles a month were asked to register on the site to continue reading News from Science. Beginning in July 2018, visitors who read more than 10 articles a month were asked to pay a modest fee of $1.50 a month. More information can be found in our FAQs (http://www.sciencemag.org/about/metered-access-faqs) and in our editorial announcements (http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/07/we-re-asking-frequent-readers-register-science-s-free-daily-news).
It is clear from the feedback we’ve received from librarians that the change to paid metered access this July took customers by surprise. We never intended for our metered paywall evaluation of News from Science to impact our library customers as we consider News from Science content to be separate from Science journal content. We sincerely apologize for any confusion or issues this has caused.
We appreciate the feedback we have received and have temporarily paused the News from Science metered paywall. The evaluation of access to News from Science may bring new iterations of access models, but journal content from Science Online, published on http://science.sciencemag.org, was never metered and will continue to be available to our institutional subscribers as part of their license as before.
We value our library subscribers and will work to identify solutions that meet the needs of AAAS and our shared communities in the coming weeks. Please feel free to contact us directly at [log in to unmask] if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions.
Sincerely yours,
Elisabeth
