Dear all,
This is an important call-for-evidence for the geophysics community
represented by the British Geophysical Association,
particularly geodesy specialists. I've deleted the attachments
because they were 2 Mb but they can be found as links on the
following webpage:
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-launch-call-for-evidence-to-be-geospatial-world-leader
If you have any comments please let Flo Bullough know, and copy me
in so I can bring them to the attention of the British Geophysical
Association or our other parent society, the Royal Astronomical Society.
Regards,
Sheila Peacock,
list co-owner.

Dear all,
I wanted to get in touch regarding the recently announced *National Geospatial Strategy – Call for Evidence (attached)*. The recently formed ‘Geospatial Commission’ has launched a call for evidence to understand and map the future of location data for the UK. The work is being done in collaboration with 6 partner bodies, including the British Geological Survey, the Coal Authority and the UK Hydrographic Office.
The call for evidence is very broad ranging but contains a number of focus areas (some explicitly mentioned, some not and need highlighting) that are relevant to geoscience research and industry. These include
* Earth observation and satellite imaging,
* geological maps,
* subsurface and near-surface environmental data,
* subsurface geophysical data,
* marine geospatial data,
* natural resources and subsurface infrastructure data.
As well as broader themes such as the requisite skills needed when working in geospatial data in the geosciences and the current interoperability of geospatial data in the geosciences with other data sets.
Some of the more relevant questions in the questionnaire are listed below:
* What are the geospatial needs/gaps in the sector.
* Which datasets should be prioritised for increased access.
* How can the Commission develop the UK’s capability in Earth observation data.
* How should geospatial infrastructure be prioritised for development and investment?
* Which existing or potential geospatial applications can be scared up or developed to capture economic value.
* Are there any useful international comparisons for where geospatial data development is done well and could be a model for best practice?
Any comments of suggestions from your respective specialisms that could contribute to a Geological Society-led submission would be much appreciated. And please do circulate to any relevant networks/colleagues that may have useful suggestions to make on this theme. If I could have any thoughts/suggestions by *_Wednesday 26^th Septembe_r*, that would be much appreciated. *__*
Many thanks,
Flo
