Natality vs Immortality: The Case of Frankenstein & The Creature
Friday November 30, 2018 – Saturday December 01, 2018, Cyprus
Two hundred years after the publication of Frankenstein or, The Modern Prometheus, the interest of many societies in finding a “cure” for death has increased exponentially. Whether through cryopreservation or special diets of superfoods, the interest in prolonging life with the aid of scientific knowledge has become a popular and acceptable pursuit. Reproductive science, in response to people’s desire for offspring, a more traditional sort of immortality, are examining the possibility of cloning, so far justified as a way to deal with the most challenging cases of infertility. The idea that everything that is born must die might one day no longer be true or, at least, necessary.
As one of the events participating in the international celebration of the 200 years since Mary Shelley published her landmark novel, this conference invites papers that consider the problematization of natality and of immortality in Frankenstein as well as in any of the works it has since inspired. We especially welcome papers investigating the novel and its adaptations in any medium that focus on contrasting perspectives and discourses of the quest for the origin, meaning and purpose of life.
Proposals are also invited on any other theme arising from the novel and in any form of delivery, including posters or alternative/experimental presentations. Please send 200 word proposals by 01 October 2018 to: [log in to unmask] Speakers will be notified by 08 October 2018.
Conference Coordinators: Dr Evy Varsamopoulou, University of Cyprus ([log in to unmask]) and Dr Olga Michael, UCLan, Cyprus ([log in to unmask]).
