This amazing collection - one of the largest in the world - is a magnet for researchers and academics across the globe. As Head of Research, you'll be at the heart of the organisation, establishing The National Archives as a centre of pioneering research. It's a chance to build our reputation, your profile and a truly world-class function.
About the role
This is an opportunity to join us at an exciting time, and to build a Research Department of national importance. We'll look to you to lead our research function, growing our reputation and introducing new ideas. This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference by conducting research that has direct application to the real world, raising and solving crucial questions for the field. Your efforts will not only benefit the academic and research sector; they'll help raise funding for further archives work. With a shift to digital a huge challenge for the future, you'll also be right at the heart of our cutting-edge agenda. On a day to day basis, you'll develop strategies, lead projects on our research priorities, build relationships and maximise the benefits that research brings to The National Archives, academia and our wider audiences.
About you
We're looking for someone whose ambitions match ours - a highly motivated academic professional who can inspire enthusiasm and support whilst leading and shaping our research function. To ensure that you have sufficient gravitas, you must be an authority in research leadership, ideally with a relevant PhD. You'll have built relationships within the academic and research sector, and acquired sound networking skills. Articulate and a strong negotiator, you'll have the confidence to represent us at the most senior level. If you also know enough about technology to direct digital development, this could be your chance to make a name for yourself with us.
Please note that we will accept applications on a two to five year secondment basis if required.
