Dear subscribers
Many may have heard that CEU in Budapest has been compelled, by legal force majeure, to abandon - for the time being - its unique educational programme for refugee-migrants who are settled in Hungary….Olive.
If not see: https://www.ceu.edu/article/2018-08-28/ceu-suspends-education-programs-registered-refugees-and-asylum-seekers
CEU does not wish to halt this program but, as the law seems to imply, if it continues to support refugees in Hungary 25% of its total income becomes forfeit in a special tax… ie the whole university has to close….
Colleagues will know that I have long resisted describing the Orban regime in the terms others bandy about but this particular measure, in the context of the total neutering of the legal apparatus and the Supreme Court in particular, is fascistoid….
I would like to launch some form of international e-protest petition to the European parliament. There are simple ways to demand a commission invesigation of a breach of 'treaty' - which this clearly counts as - but that's kind of silent and bureaucratic whereas this legal trickery is tangible, sick and demands a more public response…
Our CEU colleagues are - as you can imagine - gutted… a total and unprecedented (since 1945 in a non fascist state) interference in their academic freedom….)
Does anyone have any suggestion as to the best means of doing this?
Is it one fo the - to my mind slightly ‘crap’ - crowd sourced petition bodies like Change.. or??
It would be good to phrase this simultaneously in terms of Refugee rights AND academic freedom.. (others will have noticed that the mad Hungarian government is trying to ban gender studies degrees being accredited in that blighted country….)
Thoughts? do just reply to me direct if you wish
Michael
