Look at the work of the Northmoor Trust (now called the Earth Trust) based in Little Witenham in S.Oxfordshire. They have done quite a lot in this area. (There was also a freshwater ecology group at Oxford a few years back who had some European money to do public engagement. Memory fails me on the details...
