Senior Biostatistician in Clinical Trials at University of Birmingham

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of two prestigious programmes of research that are being undertaken at the University of Birmingham, in partnership with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The first of the these programmes is the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) at Birmingham which aims to use cutting edge experimental medicine to accelerate access to, and adoption of, drugs, devices and diagnostic tests for patients living with chronic inflammatory diseases. The second is the Arthritis Therapy Acceleration Programme (A-TAP), which is a collaboration between Universities of Birmingham and Oxford, funded by the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, which aims to speed up the development of new targeted therapies across four related immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.

Both programmes of research are centred on the design and delivery of clinical trials which will take place within the Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit (CRCTU), one of the largest UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) registered clinical trials units in the country, based in the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences at University of Birmingham. The CRCTU incorporates a dedicated academic-led Diagnostics, Drugs, Devices and Biomarkers team (D3B) running specialist early phase non-cancer trials. The CRCTU employs a multidisciplinary team of around 200 staff including statisticians, systematic reviewers, trial management staff, research nurses, monitors, programmers, administrators and IT staff.

The CRCTU has positions available for two Senior Biostatisticians to work on the BRC and A-TAP programmes, as part of the statistical team consisting of around 20 statisticians working on a varied portfolio of trials. The expanding team of statisticians working on non-cancer trials is located in the newly refurbished Institute of Translational Medicine. Biostatisticians play a central role in the Unit, actively liaising with clinical investigators, contributing to the design and conduct of clinical trials, being responsible for interim and final analysis of clinical trial data and having a key role in the presentation and publication of results. As academic members of the University, Biostatisticians contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The CRCTU is actively involved in developing and implementing novel statistical methodology related to clinical trials and associated translational research. Members of the team are encouraged to pursue their own research interests and opportunities exist to carry out postgraduate qualifications.

The successful candidate will have a MSc or PhD in Statistics or a relevant subject with strong aptitude for statistical programming and modelling. Applicants for these senior posts must possess significant previous experience of working as an applied medical statistician and will be expected to take a lead statistical role in projects within a short time of appointment. The position is full time, fixed term contract for 2 years, starting salary is normally in the range £39,993 to £47,722, with potential progression once in post to £53,690 a year.
