Dear Andi,
At the Faculty of Physics (University of Vienna), we have a sci comms
project conveying visual information from material science projects
through music.
I am happy to give more detailed information in person.
Summarizing the project, we selected microscopic images, data plots,
simulations and animations from seven research groups working in
material science which we used in the following way...
1) We ran an international composition competition for which we received
60+ compositions from over 26 different countries. The finalists were
invited to a public concert in Vienna where the composers and physicists
joined up to present their music/research.
2) We invited composers to submit their creations as soundfiles which
received over 11,000 votes in an open online voting process. The winning
entries were part of an interactive exhibition on the campus of the
university.
The playlists of the winning entries can be found here:
https://www.matter.soundsof.net/winners
The research images can be found here:
https://www.soundsof.net/materials
3) We also deliver a series of workshops for which e.g. the composer
Adrián Artacho designed a smartphone-based system that simplyfies
mathematical operations and turns a computing game into a full body
immersive sound+light experience - see

All the best,
ChristianeM
