The Opportunities & Challenges of Studying the 20th-Century History of Science, Technology & Medicine
Friday, 5 Oct 2018. Nucleus: The Nuclear and Caithness Archives, Wick, Caithness
Studying the recent history of science, technology and medicine (HSTM) brings with it its own particular set of opportunities and challenges. The sources used to research recent history are increasingly varied and extensive. As researchers, we deal with a combination of materials, including paper, born-digital, audio and audio-visual. Access may be restricted through copyright laws or changes of ownership. Moreover, key actors or witnesses to events may still be alive, which allows new methodological approaches but also requires careful ethical considerations.
Join us for an exciting one-day workshop on Friday, 5 October 2018 on these issues at Nucleus, the newly-opened archive for the UK’s civil nuclear industry at Wick. We invite proposals from postgraduate researchers for 20-minute individual papers: share any practical problems or solutions, theoretical or methodological reflections, or a particularly unexpected opportunity or demanding challenge you’ve encountered so far in your studies of 20C HSTM.
Confirmed speakers:
- Jon Agar, Professor of STS (UCL) and author of 'Science in the Twentieth Century and Beyond'
- Gordon Reid, Head Archivist at Nucleus: The Nuclear and Caithness Archives
- Linda Ross, AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership (CDP) Student (HES, UHI)
And afterwards: why not take the opportunity for a day in the archives themselves, a look at Dounreay, a visit to the Forsinard nature reserve – or a trip to the end of the road at John O’Groats?!
Please email your abstracts of max. 250 words as a word document or pdf including your name and affiliation by 23 July 2018 to Helen Piel at [log in to unmask] with the subject line “CDP 20C HSTM Workshop” to help speed things along for us. We aim to confirm speakers by early August to allow enough time for travel arrangements.
Speakers will have bursaries of up to £100 for travel and £90 for accommodation; we’ll be circulating some travel and accommodation tips together with the confirmation of your spot on the workshop.
