We live in unprecedented times – forced displacement has now reached unparalleled levels, a situation that demands an extraordinary humanitarian response. Much has been written and documented on humanitarian contexts and the movements of people within and across national borders. In the light of environmental disasters, wars and conflict, food shortages, and environmental degradation, issues concerning the forced migration and displacement – humanitarian nexus have received considerable attention. However, within the research and literature on humanitarian action, one is continuously struck by the persistent absence of disability–even though disabled people are among the most vulnerable in crises, necessitating an informed, inclusive and active response at all phases of disaster preparedness and intervention. A genuinely inclusive humanitarian response, despite some changes, remains scarce and disability is still not mainstreamed in humanitarian action.
This international symposium aims to transcend disciplinary, epistemological, practice and other boundaries, inviting researchers, activists and practitioners to engage in critical debate around disability, displacement and humanitarian action.
We are keen to engage a range of stakeholders as we seek to debate and render visible the lives and voices of disabled people in situations of mass displacement, and push for disability as a key area of study and practice mainstreamed in humanitarian action.
The objectives of the event are the following:
· Provide an interdisciplinary space for critical reflection on the intersections between disability and humanitarian action
· Critically discuss the space and location of disability in disaster preparedness and response;
· Offer a space for consideration of options for non-disabling and inclusive humanitarian practice and global policies
· Critically explore approaches ensuring that all services and humanitarian assistance are available and accessible to all disabled people irrespective of type of disability, gender, age or legal status
· Discuss the limitations of policy, rights and services in regard to disability in humanitarian action;
· Connect actors working in and across a range of sectors to forge alliances for critical thought and cooperative action on disability and humanitarian action.
The symposium seeks to be interactive and will consist of keynote presentations and panel discussions.
