Political Geography is seeking a new associate editor with a focus on quantitative conflict studies or electoral geography. The position would start 1 September 2018.
Associate editors are responsible for all aspects of manuscript processing, including selecting and recruiting referees, managing the revision process, making acceptance decisions, and, when necessary, facilitating communication between authors and Elsevier production and publishing staff. Political Geography operates in a relatively decentralized manner with each member of the editorial team having full responsibility for her or his queue, which would typically be around 50 articles per year. In addition to overseeing review and publication of individual articles, each associate editor is expected to work with other team members to chart the journal’s future direction as well as the conceptualization and organization of special issues, conference-based plenary lectures, and other activities that advance the journal’s standing and facilitate the publication and promotion of articles and associated online materials. In carrying out these duties, the associate editor will be expected to work closely with continuing members of the editorial team: Editor-in-Chief Phil Steinberg and Associate Editors Tor Benjaminsen, Kevin Grove, Fiona McConnell, Filippo Menga, and Antonis Vradis.
Political Geography is rooted in the discipline of geography and we expect associate editor candidates to be familiar with the subdisciplinary literature. However we recognise that the political geographic literature has extensive links with bodies of research carried out in cognate disciplines and to that end we will look favourably on associate editor candidates with expertise in cognate areas. Additionally, because Political Geography has an international readership we would look favourably on applications from candidates who have an expertise outside the English-language tradition. Potential applicants are advised to see the Political Geography website for further specification of the journal’s remit.
Editors are normally appointed for renewable three-year terms, with a modest stipend provided by Political Geography’s publisher, Elsevier.
If you are interested in applying for the position, please send your CV and a 1-2 page statement of interest no later than 15 July 2018 to Kay Tancock, the journal’s Publisher, at [log in to unmask] Letters of interest should include a summary of general research interests and specialisations, a discussion of your vision for the journal, and a statement of how you would meet some or all of the qualifications noted above. Shortlisted candidates will also be asked to provide two letters of reference.
