This one-day course provides an introduction to applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis in understanding retail sector dynamics. We focus on the visualisation and analysis of data related to retail supply (e.g. store catchments) and demand (including geodemographics) at national, regional and local scales. We consider commercial and public sector applications of retail analytics and introduce increasingly sophisticated analysis tools. These include GIS-based measures of accessibility and network analysis to determine retail service areas.

A series of fully supported hands-on practical sessions, interspersed with short lectures and group activities, provide an applied and theoretical perspective, with examples drawn from the UK but relevant in a number of international contexts. The course activities draw on CDRC data resources (where possible) and signpost users to further freely available or commercially-licensed data sources for use within their own research.

Participants will leave with a clear practical awareness of GIS and spatial analysis techniques commonly applied in retail analytics.

Who is the course suitable for? This course is designed for participants who have limited prior knowledge of spatial analysis in the context of retail analytics. Participants are likely to be PhD students or researchers looking to work with spatial data related to consumers or the retail sector - whether in a commercial, public sector or policy focussed context. Skills will be taught using examples from the UK retail sector but participants will be encouraged to consider how these tools and techniques could be applied in alternative contexts. The course will signpost participants towards CDRC and freely available data resources which would enable them to extend these analysis in their subsequent work.

GIS for Crime Data Analytics<https://www.cdrc.ac.uk/events/gis-for-crime-data-analytics/>

This one-day course will follow a linear format, with a series of lectures and practical exercises leading attendees through the key steps involved in performing basic crime analysis in ArcGIS.  Starting with an overview of environmental criminological theories, the course will also include information on: (i) accessing open source crime data, (ii) locating complementary data sets e.g. area boundary files, (iii) advantages/disadvantages of different data sources, (iv) importing crime data and spatial data into ArcMap, (v) mapping data and querying data in ArcMap, and (vi) interpreting results of analysis.
Objectives
·         Understand how spatio-temporal convergences can influence crime patterns
·         Develop a critical awareness of different data sources
·         Learn how to format data ready for analysis in a GIS
·         Gain practical experience of working with ArcCatalog, ArcMap, and ArcToolbox
·         Use mapping techniques to identify crime hot spots
·         Consider how results might translate practically


Who is the course suitable for? Anyone wanting to perform basic crime analysis in ArcGIS.  Attendees do not need to have any prior knowledge of geographical information systems, although basic computer skills are required.

This one-day course provides an introduction to Quantum GIS, an open source Geographic Information System software package. You will be introduced to the various components of the software and learn how to work with both vector and raster data layers. You will learn how to run simple geospatial analyses, how to edit existing maps and how to create maps using your own data, which we encourage you to bring with you to the course.
No prior knowledge is assumed for this course other than having basic IT skills.

Course Tutors: Drs Andy Newing and Nick Hood

This one-day course introduces participants to sophisticated spatial analysis and spatial modelling approaches that can be used to understand retail sector dynamics. We focus on the analysis of complex interactions between retail demand (consumers) and the retail supply side (retail stores). The tools that we introduce are applied widely by the commercial retail sector and we reflect on the important link between academia and industry in the continual development of these modelling approaches. We introduce participants to statistical and spatial modelling using simulated data related to UK consumers. These include regression and powerful industry-standard spatial interaction (or gravity) modelling. The course is taught via a series of fully supported hands-on practical sessions, interspersed with short lectures and group activities. This provides an applied and theoretical perspective, with examples drawn from the UK but relevant in a number of international contexts.

This course follows on from the CDRC training course above. Aside from a brief recap of key spatial analysis techniques and spatial data sources, this course teaches entirely new content. It is suitable for those who attended the introductory course and also those wanting a stand-alone course in retail modelling. Participants will leave with a clear practical awareness of model-based spatial analysis techniques commonly applied in retail analytics. Participants may also think differently about their own consumer behaviours having undertaken this course!
Who is the course suitable for? This course is designed for participants who have some experience of spatial analysis using GIS, but no prior knowledge of statistical or spatial modelling is required. Participants are likely to be PhD students or researchers looking to use spatial modelling to enhance their analysis of retail/consumer data in. The course will signpost participants towards CDRC and freely available data resources which would enable them to extend these analysis in their subsequent work.
