The European Meeting of Statisticians (EMS), sponsored by the European Regional Committee of the Bernoulli Society, is the main statistics and probability theory conference in Europe. EMS is a conference where statisticians of all ages and from all regions meet to exchange ideas and talk about the newest developments on the broad field of statistics and probability theory. The very first EMS meeting was held in Dublin in 1962, and the 32nd EMS will take place in Palermo, the capital of Sicily (Italy).

*Keynote speakers:*

 - Genevera Allen (Rice University, USA),

 - Gilles Blanchard (Univesity of Potsdam, D),

 - John Lafferty (Yale University, USA),

 - Victor Panaretos (EPS Lausanne, CH),

 - Judith Rousseau (Oxford University, UK),

 - Aad Van Der Vaart (University of Leiden, NL)

*Instructions for submission of abstracts:* Conference language is English. Applicants wishing to present original research should propose a topic contributed session, a contributed paper or a poster, addressing a full range of subjects in statistics and its many application fields. The submission will start on the 1st of October 2018 and will end on 15th of April 2019. For more information visit the

Subject: MRC IMPACT Studentship - idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis DEADLINE: Friday 13th July

MRC IMPACT studentship (3.5 years)

*Sex-specific genetic architecture of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis*

Supervisors: Prof Louise Wain (Leicester) & Prof Gisli Jenkins (Nottingham)

Student will be based at the University of Leicester.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is a rare, chronic and progressive lung disease with poor prognosis and limited treatment options. Men are more likely to develop IPF; in 2012 16 males and 9 females for every 100,000 people received a first diagnosis of IPF.

Previously published genome-wide association studies [1-6] have identified

18 signals of genetic association with IPF with the most replicated associations being in or near the *MUC5B *and* DSP* genes. However, all of these studies analysed males and females together and sex-specific genetic determinants have not been investigated.

The primary aim of this project will be to understand the genetic factors that drive this difference in order to further our understanding of the disease process to aid development of new therapeutic strategies.

The student will be based at the University of Leicester within an internationally-recognised respiratory genetic epidemiology group and benefit from close collaborations with leading IPF clinicians and researchers from the UK and USA. A broad training in genetic epidemiology will equip the student for a career in the fast-moving and opportunity-rich field of human disease genetics. Applicants should have a background in bioinformatics, epidemiology, statistics or genetics (or similar), with an aptitude for computing (prior programming experience advantageous but not

essential) and a keen interest in how genetics affects human health and disease.

Closing date: *Friday 13th July 2018 [NEW deadline]*

Interviews: Friday 20th July (Birmingham)

Subject: SEMINAR: Matt Wand (UTS, Australia) in Leeds

Dear Allstat,

I have the great pleasure of announcing a special seminar by Professor Matt Wand from University of Technology Sydney, Australia with details as below. Matt has a long and distinguished research career (many people will know his 1995 book on kernel smoothing with Chris Jones, for example). Matt is in Leeds for a two-week research visit and will give a seminar based on his 2017 JASA paper -- link below.

Date: Wednesday 25th July 2018

Time: 11:00-12:00

Venue: School of Mathematics, Level 8, Room MALL 1

Matt Wand (University of Technology Sydney, Australia)

Fast Approximate Inference for Arbitrarily Large Statistical Models via Message Passing

We explain how the notion of message passing can be used to streamline the algebra and computer coding for fast approximate inference in large Bayesian statistical models. In particular, this approach is amenable to handling arbitrarily large models of particular types once a set of primitive operations is established. The approach is founded upon a message passing formulation of mean field variational Bayes that utilizes factor graph representations of statistical models. The notion of factor graph fragments is introduced and is shown to facilitate compartmentalization of the required algebra and coding.

This seminar is based on Matt's 2017 JASA paper which can be downloaded from https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fmatt-wand.utsacademics.info%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cwalshamjames%40PRAHS.COM%7C0ba82e75edcb45fdf46508d5e2cb7855%7C1cef9a5962ec418a96662b3afc2d2cb0%7C0%7C0%7C636664285896960652&sdata=7N5HfWOAEOmluKSVZGQS%2BwKbcJcH7mtutbhNjqifaqk%3D&reserved=0

Quantitative Trader, Jane Street , London, UK

Jane Street is a quantitative trading firm with a unique focus on technology, a scientific approach, and a deep understanding of markets to guide our business. Our entrepreneurial culture is driven by our talented team of traders and programmers. We are a global liquidity provider and market maker, operating around the clock and around the globe, employing over 700 people in our offices in New York, London and Hong Kong.

The markets change rapidly, and we need to change faster still. Every day, we come to work with new problems to solve, new systems to build and new theories to test. We’re always looking for people to join us and help come up with that next great idea. Our trading is based on our own proprietary models and on busy days we engage in over a million trades. Technology is at the core of how we approach trading, and we consider ourselves as much a technology company as a trading firm. We use OCaml, a statically-typed functional programming language, as our primary development language, and have the largest team of OCaml developers in any industrial setting.

Jane Street has an open, informal, intellectual and fun environment. You can wear a t-shirt and jeans to the office every day, the kitchen is stocked with complimentary food, there’s a gym and a games room onsite, and discussions are always lively. Subject: PhD studentship in optimal surveillance design for parameter inference in hidden-Markov epidemic models.

We invite applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship jointly hosted by CHICAS and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Lancaster University.

The project is on developing statistical methodology for designing disease surveillance programmes for dynamical infectious disease models, with the constraint that surveillance effort is independent of the disease transmission process. The project will run alongside an ongoing collaboration in Uganda and Malawi which seeks to understand the drivers of antimicrobial resistance in low-resouce settings.

This project would particularly suit a student with a statistics and/or computer science background, with an interest in methodological development alongside an important substantive application.

For further information, please contact Chris Jewell <[log in to unmask]>.

Eligibility: The studentship is open to UK applicants only.

Duration: Three years funding is provided.

Start: October 2018.

Application deadline: August 3rd

Supervisors: Dr Chris Jewell (CHICAS), Prof Peter Neal (Maths and Stats).
